I perform the music God places in my heart.
WHAT TYPES OF MUSIC DO YOU PERFORM?
Some people call it jazz, blues, inspirational, soul, or contemporary music. I simply call it storytelling.
This Ain’t Your Daddy’s Jazz, and it’s definitely not Your Momma’s Blues. These are my stories, told through the sound God built in me to deliver.
Every song begins with an experience, a lesson, a question, a prayer, or a moment that leaves an imprint on my spirit. Sometimes those stories are joyful, painful, or somewhere in between. Whatever the emotion, my goal is always to tell the truth through the music.
My sound is influenced by my Virgin Islands roots and the many cultures and genres that have shaped my life. Rather than fitting into a category, I allow the story to determine the sound.
At the end of the day, I create music to connect with people. If someone hears one of my songs and feels seen, understood, inspired, or encouraged, then I’ve done what God called me to do.
ROOTS, BEGINNINGS & PERSONAL LOSS
WHERE DID YOU GROW UP?
I was born on St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands, and my Virgin Islands roots remain at the heart of who I am. The culture, music, sense of community, and resilience of the people continue to inspire both my life and my art.
Even today, many of my creative projects reflect that connection. Caribbean Breeze was inspired by taking my son home to the Virgin Islands so he could experience the place where I was born.
HOW DID YOU FIRST BECOME KNOWN TO THE PUBLIC?
My introduction to the public began through performing arts programs and school performances.
When I discovered Duke Ellington School for the Performing Arts, God placed it on my heart that it was the right next step for me. The training, discipline, and artistic environment helped shape my foundation as a performer and storyteller.
My first major public performance was at the historic Bohemian Caverns in Washington, D.C., a moment that reinforced my desire to pursue the arts professionally.
WHAT TRAGEDY AFFECTED YOUR PERSONAL LIFE?
The untimely and unexpected death of my son, Jovan Khan, on October 30, 2023, remains the most devastating experience of my life.
His loss challenged my faith, my health, my strength, and my understanding of how to move forward when the person you love most is no longer physically present.
EALING, HEARING & CREATIVITY
The creative arts became a vital part of my healing journey, helping me process grief through music, writing, service, and faith.
Today, I honor my son’s memory through my music, my service, my creativity, and my commitment to helping others find hope in their own journey.
One example is Metronome, a song about heartbreak and finding the strength to keep moving forward one beat at a time.
WHAT MEDICAL CONDITION DID YOU DEVELOP?
In 2018, I experienced a fall that resulted in three brain hemorrhages and ten skull fractures, eight of which were inside my right ear. One doctor told me that one of my ear bones had broken in the shape of a broken heart.
Although I recovered from the accident, I never fully regained hearing in my right ear.
Through faith, therapy, creative expression, community service, and the support of people who genuinely cared for me, I slowly began rebuilding. The journey taught me resilience, gratitude, and grace.
HOW DID YOU CONTINUE PERFORMING AFTER LOSING PART OF YOUR HEARING?
I took about a year away from performing to focus on physical therapy, vocal training, and spending time back in the studio with friends.
Looking back, losing part of my hearing taught me that adversity doesn’t always take away your purpose. Sometimes it challenges you to discover a new way to fulfill it.
HOW CAN MUSIC HELP PEOPLE COPE WITH GRIEF AND LOSS?
For me, the creative arts became a necessary part of healing. I wrote constantly—and I mean constantly. Whether it took the form of a song, poem, prayer, or short story, writing became my voice.
One of the greatest lessons I learned is that grief needs somewhere to go.
Music may not remove the pain of loss, but it can help us process it, understand it, and remind us that we are not alone in carrying it.
WHAT CHALLENGES MIGHT A SINGER FACE AFTER LOSING HEARING?
The experience taught me patience, adaptability, and resilience. Most importantly, it taught me that limitations don’t have to define your future. Sometimes they simply require you to find a new way forward.
DO YOU THINK PERSONAL STRUGGLES CAN INFLUENCE AN ARTIST’S CREATIVITY? WHY OR WHY NOT?
Absolutely.
I was told years ago that my voice, my writing, and my perspective would change as I moved through different seasons of life. Looking back, they were absolutely right. Every experience—both good and bad—has influenced the way I create.
Soulmates is a love letter to God and a reminder that creativity can be a tool for mentorship and community.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SONG VERSE THAT HELPED YOU THROUGH GRIEF & RECOVERY?
I created a playlist called Motivation. It became a companion through some of the most difficult moments of my life. The playlist includes uplifting and inspirational music from a variety of genres and artists.
Rather than helping me stay in one emotion, it helped me move through many of them

GRACE AFTER THE STORM
Life has tested Emerald in ways most never imagine.
In 2018, a fall left her with three brain hemorrhages and ten skull fractures—eight of them inside her right ear. One doctor said one of her ear bones had broken in the shape of a broken heart.
Though the road to recovery was long, she never regained full hearing in that ear.
Then, on October 30, 2023, Emerald experienced the unimaginable loss of her beloved son, Jovan Khan.
The grief shook her to the core. It challenged her faith, her health, her strength, and her ability to understand how to keep moving forward.

“She turned pain into purpose and used her story to light the way for others.”

HER GREATEST PERFORMANCE IS STILL AHEAD
Believe in yourself. Clap for yourself. Encourage yourself, especially when the voices around you are few. Trust the process, keep doing the work, and don’t allow temporary setbacks to convince you to abandon a permanent calling.
Your gift isn’t just for you—it’s meant to help someone else along the way.
